Rugby is a physical sport which involves endurance and teamwork, but when players are injured, they can’t help the team. Dr. Allen Conrad, BS, DC, CSCS, the Team Doctor for the Blackthorn Rugby Team, recommends chiropractic care as an essential aspect of the injury process, as well as helping prevent injuries with proper spinal alignment and proper posture.

“One of our main goals at Montgomery County Chiropractic Center is to help our players remain in top condition, and part of that is working with them on flexibility and balance training exercises. This type of gait training ensure that the players are doing everything they can to stay on the field more and reduce lost time from injuries.” Rugby involves tackling, running, balance, and coordination with other teammates. If you are thinking about how your body feels during play, you aren’t focusing on the play itself. This is why we want the players to have proper range of motion, strength, balance and flexibility, so that the body is working at its peak performance when on the field.

Chiropractic care is essential for maintaining proper form while exercising, running, or for everyday activities. We have notices while working with athletes that with regular treatment, they exhibit faster time, less setbacks, and overall improved sports performances.

What chiropractic treatments are helpful for rugby and other sports injuries?

For contact sports like rugby, proper range of motion of the spine and it’s extremities is important. In addition to chiropractic adjustments, other types of physical modalities can help in the recovery process. These include electrical muscle stimulation, therapeutic ultrasound, massage therapy, mechanical traction, and gait training.

Electrical muscle stimulation is a machine which is helpful in reducing pain and spasm after an injury. It is applied to a muscle after a sprain or strain, and is effective in reducing the spasm through muscle contractions. Therapeutic ultrasound is another machine used for injuries, and this is helpful for reducing swelling and inflammation. This is common after a twisted ankle, and this application can help get the injured area back to normal range of motion. Massage therapy is another helpful method for reducing spasm after an injury, and in coordination with chiropractic care it works well for helping muscle aches and pains. Gait training is effective in improving balance and flexibility for an injury, or also as a part of a regular training session. Rugby players need to rely on their balance while running so that the body can perform at its best, and flexibility training can help prevent a muscle strain or sprain by maintaining full range of motion.
